Die Stage Chart
Description: Missing serifs on the lower Left leg of the R of LIBERTY.
Reported by: James Wiles

Comments: The jury is still out on whether these are the result of over-abraded dies or are modifications to a working hub. I hold to the latter for the following reasons.
  • There is little to no basining around the back of the head to indicate abrading has taken place.
  • All of the Left legs end straight across and are identical in length, which would most likely not be the case if they had been abraded.
  • The 1971 San Francisco issues have a matching Peg Leg in both low and high relief.
  • All of the 1972 San Francisco issues are Peg Leg, both low and high relief.
  • It appears the mint was experimenting with the Peg Leg design in late 71 and early 72 and made a change over in 72 for the San Francisco strikes.
